VATICAN CITY - Roman Catholic cardinals elected the church's first South American leader Wednesday, choosing a conservative with "great compassion" who is the son of a railway worker and who takes a bus to work.
Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, will be known as His Holiness Pope Francis I.
The new leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics - who is also the first Jesuit, and the first non-European pope for more than 1,000 years - was introduced from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
